“Red in the Face” Mad Men Episode Recap

“Red in the Face” is the seventh Mad Men episode of the first season, and the title refers to Roger Sterling’s insatiable hunger for debauchery whether at work, or in his private life. As one of bosses of the Sterling-Cooper advertising firm, Roger is actually on friendly terms with his biggest rainmaker, Don Draper.

The two are often seen at the office sharing a drink, a joke, and a chuckle about all the oddities that are a normal part of the ad man’s world. On this particular episode, Roger is invited into the Draper home for an evening dinner with Betty and Don. Roger ends up drinking too much alcohol, and cannot help himself from making an inappropriate pass at Betty. However, Don seems to blame the act on Betty herself, causing further friction between Betty and Don’s overbearing presence as a successful ad man. The night becomes a disaster and despite Roger’s apology to Don, their relationship is severely strained afterwards.

Roger further finds no solace in Joan after his recently unsuccessful bid to escalate their relationship to something serious. Pete Campbell is similarly having issues with his relationship, as he continues to struggle with feelings of inadequacy as a man in the form of an argument over a wedding gift. Pete receives a rifle as a gift, which Trudy Campbell refuses to have in the house, therefore Pete decides to at first return it at the department store for a store credit, yet changes his mind and keeps it in his office at work. Symbolically, Pete keeping the gun represents his withdrawal from his responsibility as a married man to continue to hold onto his autonomy as an independent person, and encourages him to aid Peggy Olson in her recently-acquired new role as a copywriter for Sterling-Cooper.
